Christmas and family

Christmas for me is a reminder of the happy times that I had growing up in an island in the middle of the Atlantic. May Madeira my homeland my paradise my Dad used to tell us that we were very lucky to live in a little corner of paradise and he was right about that.

We lived in ignorant bliss about the world troubles. We were a rather large family with loving parents my dear Dad a musician and a very funny man, he always kept us entertained with his music we were his orchestra at home he used to tell us to make certain sounds with our mouth and of course we had the saucepans and lids too for drum and he conducted his band pointing at us in turn, to make our sounds! Oh the laughter I can still hear it.

Oh I too can still hear Mum say to my Dad you are a big kid I can’t hear myself think with all the noise. Bless her she had a hard life with 8 children and two elderly parents to look after but she did it all without complaining and at Christmas it all comes flooding in all that Love.

Mum baking all the broas (Cookies) and the Cakes the house smelling of spices that If I close my eyes now I can still see it in my minds eye. Now its my turn am the one that is doing all the baking and my house smell’s heavenly the spices permeates through the house just like I remember growing up on my Island in the middle of the Atlantic my Madeira.
