My Madeira

Today was wet, we have had this cloud of mist apparently it was a sand storm blowing towards Madeira from the Sahara but hopefully with the rain it might clear let’s hope so, am tierd of swipping the patio.

The other day I went for a levada walk this time of the year it can be a little wet up in the mountains but worth getting wet just for the scenery.

Levada walk

Madeira meaning((wood))is so called because of the thick forest that it was surrounded by,when the island was discovered they had to use machetes to go through. And its believed that they set fire to it and that it burnt for 7 years but I think it might be just be a tale! Or it could be true!

Madeira is very fertile in 1452 sugar cane was introduced an by 1490 the sugar mills produced and exported. Then sugar was considered as the white gold and it made many people rich…. Am always fascinated by the history of my little island in the middle of the Atlantic.
